Walnut Tree (Juglans regia)

Walnut Tree at the Bible Garden, Burnley

The fruits of the walnut tree are widely used as food, either on their own or added to other foods, even as an alcoholic liqueur. The husks can be used for ink and dye. The wood is used for furniture, wall panelling, gunstocks etc. Many ancient texts refer to the walnut.

Our two walnut trees in the car park are still quite small, but should grow into beautiful trees, and bear nuts as well.

Biblical

We found only one reference to walnuts: a wonderful garden is described, which is a nut orchard:

I went down to the nut orchard, to look at the blossoms of the valley, to see whether the vines had budded, whether the pomegranates were in bloom.

Song of Solomon 6.11

The other reference to nuts in the Bible is in Genesis 43.11, but it is to “pistachio nuts”; pistachio trees will not survive in our climate.
